A Beginner’s Guide to Your First Patek Philippe Watch

Rolex, Breitling, and Omega are three of the heavyweights when it comes to luxury watches. These watchmaking companies spend millions of dollars every year on advertising to ensure that people know exactly who they are and what they offer.

But, there are some companies that make their products speak for themselves. One such company is Patek Philippe. It is quite a popular brand because the name of the company is the one who made the first-ever wristwatch.

Now, it’s owned and run by the Philippe family and they produce around 50,000 watches every year. Most of those watches are mechanical watches and there are some that use their in-house watch movements.

If you are going to invest your money in a watch, I highly recommend that you look into Patek Philippe watches. You will not be disappointed by the craftsmanship and the appeal of the watches themselves.

There are over 200 different models of watches to choose from, but they are categorized based on watch ‘families’ such as the Aquanaut, Calatrava, Nautilus, Complicated, and Grand Complication families.

Watch Families

To better help you narrow down your options, you just go to the different watch families and consider them as categories. Under each family is a set of different models that you can choose from.

For the layman, you can say the name and the particular feature that makes one model stand out. For instance, if you are just going to buy the standard Nautilus, then you say it as a Nautilus. However, if you are going to buy one that has an annual calendar, it is referred to as an annual calendar Nautilus.

Keep in mind that watch collectors and enthusiasts do not call the watch by name but rather, they say the serial number/reference number of the watch instead.

How to Buy

There are three ways for you to obtain your very own Patek Philippe watch. The first is to go to the original website of the watchmaking company. The second is through authorized sellers and the third is through the secondary market that is filled with watch enthusiasts or the grey market.

If you are going to buy an Aquanaut watch in your local dealer, do not be surprised if they are going to question you about yourself. This is their way of telling if you are not a watch dealer and if you are really worthy of the watch.

Again, this process is not unlikely, given that there are only a number of watches being sold every year. It may be a cumbersome way to get one, but you will have to undergo the procedure if you want to have yours.

Maintenance

The thing that you need to remember about luxury watches is that you have to have them serviced from time to time. This is to ensure that the watch will work in tip-top condition at all times.

Typically, you will have to have your watch serviced every 3-4 years or until the watch doesn’t seem to give accurate time anymore.

Aside from that, you also have to be ready to pay a hefty price for the servicing of the watch since you will have to pay anywhere between $800-$1000 for such.
